Highway robbers kill prison officer, bolt away with his bag

An officer from the Kumasi Central Prisons, Chief Officer Francis Dzaka Mawunyo set to retire this June, 2022, has been shot dead by some highway robbers on the Asiakwa-Apedwa stretch on the Kumasi Highway.

According to a report by Myjoyonline, a situational report from the Kibi Divisional Police confirmed the incident stating that, at about 2:30 am on Thursday, January 27, 2022, at the spot between Brimso and Enyinasi, 20 vehicles were lined up by some three robbers of which they were robbing passengers of their belongings.

The officer who was said to be onboard a 46-seater Hyundai bus with registration number AP 260-22 traveling from Kumasi to Accra was stopped by the robbers which they demanded for his bag but he resisted. Reports indicated that one of the angry robbers then shot him in the left eye killing him instantly.

“On the spot investigations disclosed that three armed men suspected to be of Fulani extraction stopped the vehicles and robbed the passengers of their properties, including cash and mobile phones.

“It was further disclosed that the robbers demanded that the deceased surrenders his bag, but he resisted, as a result, one of the robbers armed with pump-action gun fired at him at close range by the left eye, killing him instantly.

“The robbers subsequently collected the bag of the deceased”, it said.

Meanwhile, a search on the body of the deceased brought out an amount of GHc340 and a Prison Service ID card with his name Dzaka Francis Mawunyo on it.

The body has since been taken to the Kibi government hospital morgue pending autopsy whiles police goes further into investigations to apprehend the suspects.
