“Return to constitutional rule, or you face sanctions”-ECOWAS Chair to Guinean coup plotters

The current Chairperson of the Economic West African State(ECOWAS) Authority and the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has threatened the Guinean defense and security forces to return back to constitutional order following a coup last Sunday, 5th September, 2021 or they faces sanctions.

According to a message posted by him yesterday, September 5th 2021, “ECOWAS demands respect for the physical safety of the President of the Republic, Professor Alpha Condé”, and his immediate and unconditional release as well as that of all arrested persons. ECOWAS also demands a return in constitutional order or pain of sanctions”, the statement read.

It added that, “We ask the Guinean defense and security forces to remain in a constitutional posture, and express our solidarity with the Guinean people and their Government.”

The 83 year-old Alpha Condé who has been President of Guinea since December 2010, has been overthrowned by military officers following a coup in the country last Sunday. In a viral video that was circulating all over social media yesterday, the youths of the country together with the military officers were seen jubillating around after the president’s arrest. According to sources from Guinea, there had been some unfair rulling by the government over some period of time, thus, the reason for the coup.

Alpha Condé was however in his third term in office after winning presidential elections in 2020 with 59.5%. He was seen in a video that appears to have been taken after the military coup wearing a partly buttoned shirt over a pair of jeans and seated hopelessly among a number of arms-bearing soldiers. He however looks disheveled away from the usual suit-draped individual he is known publicly.
