President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has announced the reopening of Ghana’s land and sea borders two years after closing them as part of the measures to prevent COVID-19.
His announcement was however made when he was addressing the nation on COVID-19 on Sunday, March 27, 2022, and said it will take effect on Monday, March 28, 2022.
“As from tomorrow, Monday, 28th March, all land and sea borders will be opened”, he said.
He added that, “Fully vaccinated travellers will be allowed entry through the land and sea borders without a negative PCR test result from the country of origin. Citizens and foreign residents in Ghana, who are not fully vaccinated, will have to produce a negative 48-hour PCR test result, and will be offered vaccination on arrival.
Background
One could recall in March 21, 2020, when the president suggested the need for Ghana’s borders to be closed as part of the measures to curb the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, despite several appeals to the government by lawmakers from the land border communities for the borders to be opened, the government argued that opening the borders would lead to the importation of more COVID-19 cases.
