Students Threaten to Demonstrate Over UTAG Strike.

The coalition of Concerned University students (CoCUS) have called on the government to resolve disagreement with the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) for academic work to resume immediately.

According to the union, the indefinite strike by UTAG is having negative impact on the academic calendar and if the government refuses to address the concerns of UTAG with immediate effect, will affect them in the long run.

On Monday January 10, 2022, the University Teachers Association of Ghana declared an indefinite strike demanding better working conditions from the government. The National Labour Commission ordered the UTAG to call off strike but to avail.

Kofi George Abuah, the Lead Convener for the Concerned Coalition of University Students (CoCUS) said that the ongoing strike will push students to demonstrate if the government refuses to meet the demands of UTAG.

“The government must within the next few working days engage the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) with the aim of addressing the issues in a manner that UTAG will be satisfied. Currently, most students are preparing for their mid-semester assessment and end of semester examination and we believe this strike will have a negative toll on them psychologically and academically “.

“It is on the backdrop of this that we plead with the government to act right. We will be forced to demonstrate if the government does not meet the demands of the lecturers “.

He further indicated that COVID-19 has already disrupted learning and academic procedures and it is unfair to pay school and hostel fees only for lecturers to embark on an indefinite strike.
