School building collapses on students in Paga

A classroom block of an Islamic and Arabic primary school in Paga in the Upper East region has collapsed on some school children leaving them with severe injuries.

The incident is said to have occured on Monday, March 21, 2022 during a rainstorm which hit the entire Paga township at around 2pm in the Kassena Nankana West District. Four males and eight females, all in primary three sustained severe head injuries and were rushed to the Paga District Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the Headteacher of the school, Mr Addiyire Peter Ajegiwe in an interview said that at the time of the rain, all the pupils were feeling very safe in their classrooms until unfortunately, the primary three block collapsed on the pupils.

According to him, “the current state of the classroom block constructed so many years ago is a major threat to the lives of the occupants”.

He added that, “all efforts to get support from the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of the school towards the renovation of the school has not received the attention, resulting in the continuous deterioration of the school”.

He however assured that, “those currently on admission are responding to treatment and will be discharged on Tuesday, March 22, 2022”.
